Sarasota Opera: Il signor bruschino and Dido & Aeneas

The Opera House throws opens its doors once more for two short operas to wrap up its spring season. The first, by Rossini, tells the comic tale of anxious young lovers with meddling parents; the second, by Henry Purcell, relates the tragic story of the Queen of Carthage and her passion for the Trojan warrior Aeneas. The Hermitage Greenfield Prize Celebration

April 8-12

It’s time to honor this year’s Greenfield Prize winner for artistic excellence, playwright and theater artist Aleshea Harris, along with sampling a new play by 2018 winner Martyna Majok, a virtual first look at Ocean Body by 2019 winner, composer Helga Davis, and a dinner set for April 11 outdoors at the John & Mable Ringling Museum of Art. Urbanite Theatre: 2021 Modern Works Festival

During Urbanite’s virtual reading festival and celebration of women in theater, you get to vote on which of the competition’s three finalists will receive a $3,000 honorarium. The plays receiving readings are Nick & the Prizefighter by Kamilah Bush; This Is a Mortality Play Set in an Office Depot by Haley Nelson; and A Skeptic and a Bruja, by Rosa Fernandez. Choral Artists of Sarasota: Love in the Air

The choral ensemble teams with choreographer-dancer Elizabeth Bergmann to present a newly created work to the music of “Liebeslieder Walzer” by Brahms. Accompanied by a vocal quartet and piano four-hand, the virtual event also includes Brahms’ sequel, “Neue Liebeslieder.” Premieres at 4 p.m. April 11 and will be available for streaming at choralartists.org.
