THE FLYING DOG CAFE: The Flying Dog sandwichThe Place

The Flying Dog Cafe, 500 Tallevast Road, along the northern border of Sarasota Bradenton International Airport. A clean, colorful, retro-hangar interior fits the Dog’s simply superb sandwiches and neighborhood attitude. Seat yourself in an aluminum chair at a table, or grab a stool at the long concrete bar.

The Crowd

White-collar executives and overall-clad employees from nearby offices and warehouses (including Sun Hydraulics); boisterous Whitfield Estates regulars shooting the breeze with their neighbors.

Time Factor

The tables and bar fill up quickly most weekdays, but the turnover is quick, so no need to budget a full hour—unless you’re feeling sociable.

The Food

Boar’s Head meats are the undisputed stars of the sandwich-centric menu (including wraps and paninis), which also offers hearty salads and daily soup specials.

Check out the signature sandwiches, like the namesake Flying Dog (capicola, salami, prosciutto, provolone, olive oil and black pepper, $7.95) or the SRQ (roast beef, bacon, provolone and horseradish, $7.95). And don’t miss the creamy, slightly tangy “baked potato salad,” which comes as a side dish or as a condiment for your sandwich. Beer and wine are also served, including hoppy Flying Dog ale on draft.
