Avlí Mess Hall Has a New Name: 1592 Wood Fired Kitchen & Cocktails

The restaurant was forced to change its name because an Illinois company owns a trademark on the name Avlí.

Avlí Mess Hall was one of the best new restaurants to open in Sarasota in 2019. Now, less than a year after it opened, it has a new name, even as the ownership, chef and menu stay the same.

The restaurant was forced to change its name because a company with three Greek restaurants in the Chicago area owns a trademark on the name Avlí. That prompted Sarasota's Avlí to rebrand as 1592 Wood Fired Kitchen & Cocktails. The number in the name comes from the restaurant's Main Street address.

If you haven't tried 1592 yet, the new name might be the excuse you need. I'd recommend the muhammara, a smooth, spicy dip made with red peppers, walnuts, smoked paprika and pomegranates, the grilled octopus and the smoked fish rillettes, a whipped fish spread complemented by a violet-colored pickled egg, pickled vegetables and mustard seeds.

1592 Wood Fired Kitchen & Cocktails is located at 1592 Main St., Sarasota, and is open 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Friday and Saturday. For more info, call (941) 365-2234 or visit the restaurant's website.
