Sarasota continues to prove that it's more than a vacation getaway. A recent analysis of customer moves by PODS, a national portable moving and storage company, places Sarasota at the top the list of cities where its clients are headed. The data spans all of 2021 through March 2022 and identifies the top 20 cities and regions people are moving to—and leaving.

Following Sarasota, the cities and regions that made the top five relocation destinations in the country are Dallas-Fort Worth, Nashville, Tampa Bay and Ocala.

Florida leads the country in cities with the most continued growth, with six making this year’s list. Texas is close behind, and while southern states made the majority of the top 20 list, outliers like Boise, Idaho, and Portland, Maine, also made the cut.

Reasons for moving include pandemic-related ones, like the loss of a job or the option to work remotely, but also living closer to family, particularly aging family members—not to mention a lack of a state tax, sunny weather and easy access to outdoor activities. Although housing prices in Sarasota and statewide continue to rise, homebuyers still get more square footage per dollar than in bigger cities like New York, Chicago or San Francisco.

The report also listed the places people moved from. The top five are Los Angeles, Northern California-San Francisco, Chicago, Long Island and Central New Jersey.
