New College of Florida, the honors college of Florida, was founded in 1960 by citizens in Manatee and Sarasota who felt that the region needed a great college to match its impressive and growing arts organizations. The college opened its doors to students in 1964. To commemorate the 60th anniversary, the New College Foundation is launching a scholarship fundraising campaign that will run for 1,960 minutes, beginning 8 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 20 and ending 4:40 p.m. on Wednesday, October 21. The goal is to raise a minimum of $19,600. More than 90 percent of New College students receive some form of financial aid and nearly every student admitted is offered a scholarship. Consistently top ranked for its academics, the percentage of financial support awarded to students also makes New College one of the most affordable small colleges in the nation.
