Take Two

It's 'Twosday'—But What Exactly Does That Mean?

Today is 2/22/22. Are today's digits a wacky coincidence, or is there a hidden meaning in numbers? We caught up with a local spiritual practitioner to find out.

It's 2/22/22! Does today’s once-in-a-lifetime date digit sequence spell double trouble? Prompted by all those twos, will the world have an insatiable, random desire to tango? Or does the date merely portend a double taco Tuesday?

It’s probably none of those. But when you put two and two together and repeat—like today—you can get what some spiritual practitioners are referring to as the country's Pluto return.

According to astrologists, planetary returns happen when a planet returns to the place it was during a physical birth, marking a new chapter. Pluto is returning to the same degree where it was during the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776, which many consider the birth of the modern-day United States.

Pluto, the dwarf planet, symbolizes upheaval and change, and its return marks an event that many in the spiritual community point to as a major shift for the country and its leaders.

“If the moon can move tides, the other planets also have influences,” says Jo Mooy, an author and Sarasota-based spiritual practitioner who started StarSoundings, a community of meditators. If you want to know what a Pluto return is going to be like, look at what was going on the first time it came around.

"The U.S. birth chart started in 1776, during lots of stress and conflict, and those kinds of energies are rising again. We have seen so much conflict, stress and chaos—not just here but all over the world," Mooy explains. "That open rebellion of 1776 is similar to the open rebellion on the U.S. Capitol."

In short, Pluto's return is a time when the leaders you thought were trustworthy will be toppled, and institutions will be rattled. Mooy points to the past couple of months as evidence of that.

"The Queen of England stripped Prince Andrew of his patronage; the previous pope, Benedict, was accused of misconduct in a pedophile case; U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson broke his country's Covid safety rules—it's a period we've been moving toward," she says.

So what does all this mean? Is the world going to implode this Twosday?

No, Mooy says. But that door to instability opens today, and its energies will continue to affect us until roughly 2024. Things will ramp up in July and will peak from October through December–which coincides with the U.S. midterm elections.

But all is not chaos on the horizon. "The stars impel, they don't compel," Mooy says. While these energies take place on a social level, human focus and intent can mitigate that instability and chaotic energy.

The good news: Jupiter and Neptune are also coming together, jump-starting beneficial spiritual energies, which we'll see take effect around April, Mooy says.

"Spiritual connection will help us ride out the storm and will mark a rebirth," she explains. "If you're religious, pray to whatever being you pray to and ask for human consciousness to be raised to compassion and love."

Many spiritual leaders will be leading global meditations online for those reasons today.

"We have a lot of work to do as a species to begin to look at one another as brothers and sisters regardless of race, creed, politics and the rest," Mooy says.

Whether you believe in the power of numerology or not, it’s fun to think about magic and meaning on an otherwise banal weekday. In fact, some expecting mothers may have their fingers crossed.

"I think we'll have a lot of patients coming in today hoping it will be the day," says Kim Savage, a spokesperson for Sarasota Memorial Hospital. “After the past two challenging years, people are looking for something fun, something outside of the norm. Delivering a baby on 2/2/22 will be a memorable moment for some new parents and an interesting birth date for the baby.”

"Whatever you do, don't believe that today will be nutty—don't give it that credibility," Mooy says. "On 2/22/2022, let's become spiritual builders instead."
