A new brewery has officially opened in the space previously occupied by JDubs Brewing Company. Sun King Brewery, based out of Indiana, celebrated its grand opening over the weekend. While this is the brewery's first Florida taproom, its beers have been available in Florida since 2017 and have amassed a loyal local following.

"We're excited to get brewing, share our craft beers with thirsty beer lovers, and contribute to the friendly Sarasota community that has welcomed us," says brewery co-founder Clay Robinson. Robinson plans to move to Sarasota with his family later in the year, and says his team will be crafting beers especially for Florida. He also intends to partner with local nonprofits like the Humane Society of Sarasota, ALSO Youth and the Selby Foundation, to continue the Sarasota legacy of giving back to the community.

The new taproom has been refinished with bright white walls that enhance the natural sunlight streaming through the front opening. Dynamic logos for each of Sun King's beers hang on the wall above the bar to aid visitors in making their selections. The staff is teeming with hospitality professionals, including general manager Cristina Cusano, who joined the team from her former gig at Hyde Park Prime Steakhouse.

The offerings include cream ales, pale ales and specialty beers. I selected the Cherry Busey, a Flanders-style red ale aged over cherries. It's one of Sun King's specialty beers; it's lightly tart and the cherries are evident but not overpowering. Taking a sip offers relief from the hot day.

I move on to the Pachanga, a Mexican lager with hints of lime, despite having no introduction to lime during the brewing process. It's light, drinkable and transports me to the beach. An excellent selection for Sarasota, be it winter or summer—after all, every day is a beach day here.

Sun King Brewery is located at 1215 Mango Ave, Sarasota. They are open Wednesday through Sunday. For more information call (941) 893-3940 or visit their website.
